Waste management is a large industry that requires a number of specialized skills. It deals with the collection, transport, processing, disposal and recycling of domestic and industrial waste. Our daily activities produce a large amount of waste materials and many times we do not see how it is managed to enjoy a healthy and clean environment. There are several ways that waste can be processed, including landfill, incineration, and decomposition, depending on the waste material.

Any material that is recyclable can be reused after the treatment process. So, you can see that there are many things that are used for the removal of unwanted materials.

Many of the people who work in waste management are highly skilled technicians or engineers. We explore some of the jobs available in this burgeoning industry.

Dirty

Selling waste management services is essential for companies to approach companies that produce waste and need to eliminate it. This can be sold to private companies or to the local government.

Technicians / Engineers

Qualified technicians are required to keep the plant and machinery running. This can be a switch position, as many of these plants operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mechanical engineering skills and qualifications may be required to react to repairs or to carry out long-term maintenance.

Recycling of materials

This is a growing industry and includes some very specialized skill sets. Heavy plant and shredder engineers are needed to operate the equipment to shred, screen and shred recyclable waste. Engineers will also need to help maintain the equipment. Like all other jobs, you can expect management positions to keep the facilities operational.

Landfill

This is a specialized position and can often mean dealing with gas combustion engines and gas bi-product. You may also need some engineering experience. Other jobs include plant operators and managers.

Anaerobic digestion

Biomass boilers aid in anaerobic digestion and as a result require biomass engineers to manage the equipment. This sector will also require project engineers to ensure that all contractors are working together when a new plant is developed. As with the other jobs, it will require some experience in this field.
