Height, Weight, Color, History and Description of the Redbone Coonhound Dog Breed

Description. The Redbone Coonhound tends to be a well-proportioned, muscular, and lean dog, standing between 21 and 27 inches in height weighing between 50 and 70 pounds, and is classified as a medium-sized dog. Their fur is red, colored and can sometimes include a bit of white, while underneath, their skin is an intense red color. They may also have traces of white on the chest and feet.

Redbones are considered the only single-colored coonhound dog. While its coat is short and smooth, it provides adequate protection to the underlying skin. The ears are floppy and quite large, often capable of reaching the end of the dog’s nose. They may have a puppy-eyed facial expression, which makes it difficult to reject them.

It is very important to make sure your Redbone puppy or dog is up to date on all vaccinations, deworming, and cardiac preventatives. It is also suggested that you get your dog a full checkup at least twice a year to make sure there are no invisible health issues that need attention.

Story. Historically, hunters who had a dog of unknown ancestry, but were red in color, used to call them Redbone’s. Serious breeders, however, were not satisfied with this and wished to selectively breed a superior dog with the best characteristics and a more distinctive or reliable color and appearance.

Redbone Coonhounds were also bred to have a fast and reliable turn of speed, and to pick up scents and track them well. While, as the name suggests, they were bred to hunt raccoons, they can be trained to hunt other animals, including big cats.
