Virtual Survey Reveals the 2006 Ford Fusion: What Consumers Want and the Compliment of Ford Performance Parts

The 2006 Ford Fusion is the company’s first fully “digital” car. It was fully designed, engineered, and tested for manufacturing in a digital environment, using the most advanced design tools available for precision, quality, and efficiency.

Virtual shoppers can now create their own Fusions on the Web. They have a say in pricing options and color selection. By completing a survey about what else they would like to see in the cars, Ford is targeting a new tool to meet customer demand. The company aims to align consumer demand with actual production. “We’re trying to match what our customers want with what we can offer them,” says Dan Geist, Fusion’s director of marketing.

The Fusion takes on various designs with a bold three-bar grille and multi-element projector-beam headlamps and optional charcoal black leather interior with contrasting stitching on the oatmeal seats. The four-cylinder engine has a 2.3-liter displacement and makes 160 horsepower, while the 3.0-liter V6 makes more than 200 horsepower. A six-speed automatic is standard with the V6, while the four-cylinder Fusion gets a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic to send power to the front wheels.

Fusion offers a choice of the 2.3-liter Ford Duratec 23 I-4 or 3.0-liter Duratec 30 V-6. Both models feature all-aluminum construction, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, intake variable cam timing (i-VCT), and electronic throttle control. It offers smooth and spirited performance, along with good fuel economy and emission ratings. The four-cylinder engine makes 160 horsepower and can be paired with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. In other good news for the environment, the Duratec 23 I-4 will qualify as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) in California. It will be the third PZEV application for the Ford brand, following the Escape Hybrid and Focus PZEV. For even more power, there’s the 210-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6, which is paired with an advanced six-speed automatic transmission.

Fusion offers a functional cabin with class-leading rear legroom and a roomy 15.8 cu. ft. trunk with a flat load floor. Interior options include a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated front seats with six-way power adjustments, and a six-disc in-dash CD/MP3 player.

The Fusion is designed to meet stringent new side impact tests. Its B-pillars are made by welding two pieces of steel end-to-end, resulting in a stronger upper part of the vehicle and a more flexible lower part. This facilitates the absorption of energy during a crash below the level of the occupants. Strong steel construction at and above torso level helps prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment. Inside, Fusion has a long list of advanced safety technologies to protect occupants. They include Ford’s Personal Safety System(TM) with dual-deployment front airbags, energy-absorbing seatbelts and load-limiting retractors.
