CSI in Sudan

CSI in Sudan is an NGO that advocates for human rights and religious freedom throughout the world. Its main purpose is to protect religious liberty and assist people suffering from conflict, disaster, and repression. With affiliates in the United States, France, Germany, and South Korea, CSI’s mission extends well beyond the country’s borders. Among its many projects and activities in Sudan are education, health care, and disaster relief.

CSI was founded in 2003 in South Sudan, where it has helped the displaced and enslaved return to their homeland. The organization has a network of local officials and Arab traders who have helped enslaved people return home. In 2005, a peace treaty was signed in southern Sudan that put an end to slave raids and paved the way for the country’s independence in 2011. However, the peace treaty did not provide a way home for enslaved individuals. CSI has continued its work to free enslaved people. It does not trade cash for slaves but instead provides them with a cattle vaccine and safe passage home.

Since the CSI’s founding, it has continued to advocate for human rights in Sudan. It is a non-profit organization that employs a full-time South Sudanese physician in Wanjok. Besides its medical program, CSI also organizes expeditions to South Africa to raise awareness of slavery and international engagement in the region. In 2011, the organization funded a study on Egyptian Muslim abductions of young Egyptian Coptic women. GWU professor Michelle Clark investigated the case along with a group of Egyptian Coptic human rights activists and testified before Congress. The CSI in Sudan has continued to work for the protection of Egyptian Copts.

The organization provides logistical and funding support for the slaves and distributes survival kits to each returned freed slave. It claims that more than 80,000 enslaved southerners have returned home through this network.

The organization has taken a more inclusive approach by bringing together different civic forces. Currently, it is working to increase the number of civil society members, including independent scholars and advocacy groups. Furthermore, it has worked to increase the number of women and children in the ESC. This ensures that more enslaved people are included in the initiative. There are no reports of enslaved people being killed by the government in Sudan.
