Which States Allow Online Gambling?
In recent years, the attitude towards gambling in the US has softened. While no states have stepped forward to enact stricter betting rules, many have expanded their options. Previously, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act prevented all states from legalizing sports wagering – Nevada was the only complete exemption. Thankfully, that has changed. Before the legalization of online casino gambling, most states were barred from offering it. Most people believed that the Federal Wire Act banned online gambling. But, after the United States government passed the UIGEA in 2006, Illinois and New York lottery officials asked the Department of Justice for guidance on selling online lottery tickets. The Justice Department issued a memorandum reinterpreting the Wire Act to allow online gambling. It also made it legal to operate online sports betting sites in New York.
In addition to online casinos, sports betting and poker are also being considered in the USA. Arkansas has already legalized online poker and Colorado is on track to legalize sports betting. Many people expect the US to legalize online casinos and sports betting within the next few years. If these efforts prove successful, the New York sportsbooks will open their doors to US players in January 2022. But it’s important to note that these laws do not apply to all states – and they may vary between the two.
