Candle Making Project for DIY Candle Maker: How to Make Grunge Candles

Grungy candles are a quick and easy DIY candle to add to your home decor. All it takes is 15 minutes from abutment in hand to finished project and it’s cheap to start. You can find the materials right in your kitchen, garden, and craft area. You don’t need to be a candle maker to make and enjoy your own dirty candle.

Here’s a little lesson on why primitive and dirty go hand in hand.

The word grungy is a slang term that means dirty, dirty, grimy, and grimy. Used to describe dirty conditions or fashion characteristics. Grungy is associated with primitive decor due to its simple, rustic style.

Primitive means original, characteristic of an early stage of development and a self-taught artist.

When you make dirty candles, do you think about the early development stage of candle making and the natural elements? I think of a simpler time that uses a lot of creativity to decorate the home. When I create dirty candles, I think of candles with a homey and realistic touch.

Materials needed:

  1. Candle wax or a ready-made pillar candle
  2. Pillar silicone mold: if you don’t have a pillar candle
  3. Modge Podge
  4. Spices, herbs, lemon zest or orange peel.
  5. Fragrance oil Depending on the spice used, if you are making your own candle
  6. Paint brush
  7. Wax paper
  8. Wick
  9. Wick pin

Addresses: * Note: these instructions lead you to make your own pillar candle

  • Melt the wax and pour it into a silicone abutment mold.
  • Take the wick pin and place it in the center of the mold.
  • Secure the wick pin with 2 tightly tied bamboo skewers
  • Take the abutment out of the mold, pull the wick pin out of the center of the abutment and insert the wick into the hole
  • Place the waxed paper on a cookie sheet.
  • Add or mix spices on the wax paper
  • Take the modge podge, dip your brush in it, and paint a strip on one side of the pillar candle.
  • Roll or sprinkle the spices on that modge podge strip
  • Then paint another strip on the candle and add or roll spices on that strip
  • Continue with the above method until the pillar is completely covered in spices.
  • Seal the spices to the candle by applying more podge modge or by spraying the pillar with a matte finish sealer
  • Let the abutment candle dry for 48 hours.

If you have any excess wax, melt it and sprinkle it on the candle. It will give you a nice wax dripping look on the sides.

Warning – this is not a candle to burn. If you decide to sell these grunge candles or give them away, be sure to affix them with a “do not burn” warning label.

Add some dried apples and oranges, rosehips, and dried herbs to a wooden bowl. Place your new primitive and dirty candle inside. Clever! Instant primitive decoration for your home.
