Car Rental in the Grand Canyon: A Guide to Getting a Car in the Grand Canyon

There are many reasons why you would like to rent a car while in the Grand Canyon. Although there is a taxi service and a free shuttle bus that runs throughout the park, having your own vehicle is a wonderful convenience that will make your visit to the Grand Canyon even better. There have been car rental agencies in the Grand Canyon in the past, but they closed for some reason.

I spent over a year and a half living and working in the Grand Canyon. One of my jobs was working at the Grand Canyon airport as a caterer and meeting the many private pilots who would fly in search of a rental car in the Grand Canyon. You can imagine their anger when they found out there was nothing available. While I was working there, the company I was working for made a deal with Enterprise and secured a car for us to have on hand on a first come, first serve basis. This was a big step in the right direction, but if the only car was rented and the drivers had not made prior arrangements, they would have to rely on the taxi service.

Since this car is primarily available to flying private pilots, it is recommended that you reserve a car in advance to have it delivered to the Grand Canyon area by one of the car rental agencies in Flagstaff, Arizona. They charge a hefty fee to have it delivered, but the added convenience may be worth it for some. The phone number for Enterprise’s Flagstaff office is (928) 774-9407. Be sure to call well in advance to make sure someone is available to deliver the car that day as it is a long drive.

Many people who arrive at the Grand Canyon by plane, tour bus, or shuttle are surprised to find that there are no car rental agencies nearby. So if you intend to have one, be sure to reserve it in advance! Free taxi services and shuttle buses do not cover the entire area, so it will be nice to have the freedom to go where you want. It will give you more potential in your exploration of the Grand Canyon. Drive carefully!
