Controlling an alpha cat: 3 ways to tame an aggressive feline

Cats are typically warm and friendly creatures, who enjoy petting, cuddling, and purring during lazy afternoons at home. But if you have an alpha cat, this is not always the case. It may not be that nice. You may have an agenda of your own and seemingly refuse to take no for an answer. To gain control of an aggressive feline, here are 3 techniques that can be used.

Alpha cat syndrome

Cats with this behavior problem will often show signs of the following characteristics:

  • Bullying and pressure you to obey immediately.
  • He will only let you touch him when he allows it and for short periods of time.
  • Very protective of his food and toys.
  • Biting your feet or nose to get out of bed. He will also demand loudly to be fed whenever and however he likes.
  • Turning the tables

To control an aggressive cat, behavior modification is a good technique. Your furry feline must be shown who is really in charge. Only then can his boss be stopped. You can do this as follows:

  • Not responding to demanding behavior: If your cat tries to bite you or acts aggressively in any way, walk away and ignore it. If he tries to get you out of bed, take him out of the bedroom at night. Eventually he will realize that you are serious.
  • Using clicker training: Your cat will learn that he receives a treat when he hears the clicker. Later, you will learn that you can make the clicker click by doing certain things when you tell it to. You will get a click and a treat only if you do what you are told. Clicker training not only corrects your cat’s attitude, it can also improve his health and activity.
  • Rationing petting: Make your cat work to pet so she wants your attention. Pet him only when he does something to deserve it, such as sitting quietly when you feed him or obeying a voice command. Even if you’ve earned it, watch out for signs of aggression. The strokes should be brief and quick, in case he attacks.
  • An alpha cat can be trained to become tame. You need to learn that nothing in life is free and that you are the provider of all good things. If she wants good things like food and cuddles from you, she better play nice!
