Cricket – The support of a team despite adversity

An article on cricket

If the survival of our Cricket now depends mainly on the revenue collected from the World Cup;
So we can say that cricket is at its lowest point. Take the West Indies for example. His cricket is very short on average; at best, as they are still suffering from many years of Miss Management. I wouldn’t say they are real contenders for the World Cup at the moment, but I wouldn’t rule out the fact that they are capable of taking the Trophy if the team can come together on the pitch and show the playing skill they are capable of.

In 1999 they hit a low point, so to speak, being eliminated from the competition before the super six stages. At that time the team was young and not as fearsome as the team that had previously contested the cup. True, they were knocked down, but they got up and began to fight with a determination that ignites a flame of hope.

They began a campaign with Chris Gale and Wavell Hinds, up-and-coming batsmen with an attacking style that sought to overshadow the West Indies Legends of the past. Following them was Brian Lara, whose skills and techniques needed no introduction.

Then there was Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper who brought some stability to the team’s top order, Chanderpaul being consistent as a middle order hitter. He stayed solid. Hooper’s career has been plagued with inconsistencies, but nonetheless, when the mood struck him, he played positive and attacking cricket.

Then there was Ramnaresh Sarwan who has brilliant style and technique. He had an average of 50 and a batting rate of almost 80 in limited overs at the same time.

They had numerous fast bowlers like Mervyn Dillon, Lawson, Drakes and Collins. Carl Hooper’s occasional spin, Wavell Hinds and Chris Gayle’s ability to spin still failed.

We need to see changes in the Board of Directors, who lack the ability to function in their capacity as Leaders and not Takers. They lack foresight and the ability to make their own decisions. They need the insight of leaders like Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Viv. Richards and Clive Lloyd whose skills and strategies are on display. As missing from the West Indies team as a whole.
