Cycling Safely

Riding a bike can be enjoyable, but like many things in life, there are some dangers that come along with cycling. The two main problems that affect cyclists in terms of safety are falling off the bike or being hit by a car while on the road.

The most obvious way to ride a bike safely is to wear protective gear, especially a helmet. For many years, both children and adults did not wear bicycle helmets. This caused numerous serious head injuries. In recent years it has become mandatory in many jurisdictions to wear a helmet, especially for children. Wearing a good quality, suitable helmet will reduce the risk of head injury if a spill occurs. Other types of protective gear should also be considered, such as goggles, elbow and knee pads, and gloves.

When driving on the highway, there is always a risk of being hit by a car, but there are many things that can be done to avoid it. First of all, make sure you always obey traffic signals. Bicycles have to stop at stop signs and traffic lights as well. Follow all traffic signs and clearly indicate with a hand signal which direction you are going.

Also, wear clothing with reflective tape on the sides, and make sure you have adequate reflectors on the bike as well. The goal is to make yourself as visible as possible on the road. If the area you live in has bike lanes, be sure to use them. While it can be tempting to ride head-on into traffic, it’s also a safety concern, as cars pulling out of driveways and onto the streets may not see you.
