How to help your children take care of a puppy

Kids just love puppies and puppies love kids! As parents, you need to make sure that your children treat the puppy well so that he can become the perfect companion for your children.

Children benefit greatly from a dog in the house. Depending on their age, they may become involved in the care of a puppy, but you as a parent should be aware that a child can never take responsibility for another being. This means that you are and will always be responsible for the welfare of your dog just as you are for the welfare of your children.

However, your children can help care for the puppy under your supervision, an activity they will greatly enjoy.

If you delegate certain puppy care jobs to your children, they will soon learn what the puppy needs to be happy. These jobs depend on the development of their young people.

  • Younger children can help mom and dad put food in a puppy’s bowl and put the bowl in front of the puppy. You can fill the water bowl together with an adult and learn how to groom the puppy.
  • An older child can be encouraged to make sure there is always enough water in the puppy’s bowl and to refill it as needed.
  • Children can participate in puppy training and are very good at teaching dogs once they know how.

The more you educate your children about the puppy’s needs, the better they can help care for the young dog. Understanding the fact that a puppy is not a toy or a human being and has its own needs that must be respected allows a child to take another’s perspective.

Helping you care for the puppy supports your child’s development by learning to take responsibility in a fun and rewarding way. By adjusting the task to your child’s abilities, both your child and puppy will benefit greatly from growing up to become a super team.
