How to prepare your toddler for school

When my children first started school, I was excited and sad at the same time.

My babies were growing up and heading out into the big world without me. How would they manage? These were just a few of the millions of thoughts that went through my head.

There are some things you can do to help both you and your child transition from home to school. Try not to make the matter too big, as this can stress your child even more.

Here are some tips that can help

1) Find some books that cover the topic of “My First Day of School.” Read them to your child and encourage any questions they may have.

2) Have trial separations from your child. If her son has been clinging to her hip since he was born, watching mom leave him can be quite traumatic for any child. Start dropping her off at Grandma’s house for a few hours, or with friends, or maybe daycare. Work up to a full day for your child to become familiar with the separation from mom or dad.

3) Attend the school’s orientation program: take your child, show him around so he becomes familiar with the playground equipment, restrooms and classrooms he will be using. This will help reduce your child’s anxiety.

4) Structure your days like a school day: include reading time, play time, morning recess, lunch, etc. Have your child pack lunch with you and put it in their school bag. Routine preparation will help your child feel comfortable that day.

5) Arrange play dates: If you already know children who will be attending the same school, encourage play dates before the first day of school, that way your toddler will meet a familiar face on their big day.

6) Show enthusiasm for your child: If mom is anxious, her child will notice. Go ahead, leave your son, give him a big kiss and walk away. The teachers are skilled at dealing with anxious children, so they will be in good hands.

But what if my son really hates his first days at school?

Be patient, give your child love and support, listen to their fears, and encourage them to get excited. It will only take a few weeks for your child to get into a set routine.

Good luck moms and dads, I hope your child enjoys their transition to school.
