Impress – The Art of Ann Nosworthy

Descended from a Cape wine-producing family, Ann Nosworthy is inspired by the beauty of the countryside. Her theme is understood by everyday scenes that she “likes to watch”, such as innocent children playing in green fields or by a bubbling stream; animals and nature, blue skies dotted with white clouds; an old colonial farmhouse; a shady garden tea party and impressive flower arrangements by the open windows.

The theme is unlimited, but the serene mood is maintained throughout. Twice nominated “Best Oil Painter of the Year” by the South African Society of Artists, Ann Nosworthy cites her greatest influence as the works of the French Impressionists.

This is quite evident in his painting with his use of obvious “live” brush strokes emphasizing light, shadow and the general mood of the scenes he captures.
Ann captures a fleeting moment in time, a moment that she says “makes an impression” on her. Like the Impressionists, she paints everyday scenes that are pleasing to the eye, but what becomes more important than the “what” she paints is the “how”: method and technique.

Hilary Webb of Carmel Gallery in Constantia Cape Town speaks of a “mystique” in Ann’s ability to capture light and shadow that Hilary says makes each scene a “living entity”. She says that Ann’s “calming theme” and “wonderful sense of color” are instrumental in creating a presence in a room that “completes” it.

Hilary’s opinion seems to be shared by others who admired Ann Nosworthy’s artwork. Unsurprisingly, Ann’s solo shows are regular “sellouts.” Ann introduces a relaxing element to a more chaotic world, and one feels so much better for having had the opportunity to appreciate the images she creates on her canvas.
Define Art is very proud to showcase Ann’s new batch of work ahead of their November show.
