History. The Pembroke was originally bred from the Cardigan Corgi. The ancestors of the Pembroke terriers are believed to have been brought to the British Isles by the Flemish in the 12th century, the Cardigan and the Pembroke share a history spanning several centuries. Corgis were originally bred as herding dogs, used to herd cattle, horses, etc., and they managed to do this by running around the animals and biting their ankles.
