The Siberian Husky Club of America has established basic guidelines for behavior among Husky breeders.

the stallion

The stallion must be certified by the OFA as free of radiological hip dysplasia. (OFA – Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) The dog’s eyes should be diagnosed free of genetic disorders as directed by a canine ophthalmologist once a year. The dog owner must request a certification of unaffected eyes from a canine ophthalmologist for the breeding bitch.

The stallion must be free of hereditary problems and not be too large or small in size. The dog must have a proper disposition and two normally descended testicles.

The male husky must be in good health and free from disease and parasites.

The owner of the male husky should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed breeding. The stud fee that a “tie” consumes must be mutually agreed upon by the two parties.

Full stud fee is due at time of service. The dog’s owner may offer a return service in a future breeding season if the mating does not produce a litter.

The burden of proof of fertility rests with the owner of the stud…if the dog has not been tested in producing a litter. (Listed on the AKC Stud Dog Registry)

Stud dog substitutions can only take place if agreed to by the owner or agent of the bitch.

Breeding should always take place for the sole purpose of producing a better dog. Breeding should never take place for the sole purpose of maintaining a kennel or for profit from sales.

Put all arrangements in writing… stud fee… boarding… voyage… and whatever circumstance involves that particular mating. Both parties must sign the agreement.

A litter is made up of one puppy, born at term, alive or dead. The breeder will need to provide enough time for socialization and play with the puppies.

The puppies

The AKC registration form and signed pedigree must be provided when a puppy is sold. The written feeding regime must be provided to the purchaser.

Husky breeders should provide a Siberian Husky profile to buyers, which should include the pros and cons of owning a husky.

The breeder should monitor the puppies for the first year and provide advice as needed.

Maintaining the high quality standards of the Siberian Husky should always be a breeder’s consideration.
