Teaching children self control

A child is a ray of sunlight from the Infinite and Eternal, with possibilities of virtue and vice, but still without blemish. -Lyman Abbott

Children are the most beautiful creations in life. They create magic around people. The mere look of a child can bring smiles to people’s faces. Such is the beauty of being a child. Well, this is not completely true at all times. There are times when the child looks and demands certain things. They are of the opinion that throwing tantrums can get them what they want. Parents often find it difficult to control their children.

One of the important jobs of being a parent is instilling good habits in your children. Self-control is just one of them, which must be taught from early childhood. The child should be taught to express his feelings openly, without changing his temper, throwing things, biting or hitting. As a parent, one must realize that self-control will not only help the child as he grows up, but it will also help him become more sensitive and aware of his environment, peers, and parents.

Here are some tips to help your child learn the art of self-control.

1. Language: Establish simple rules that the child can understand clearly. Let your child know that talking is the only means of communication you believe in and that tantrums, biting, and hitting are not acceptable.

2. Encourage the child to find a positive method to release a negative thought/feeling. Many children like to draw, paint, stack, which you can use to teach the method to vent their feelings. This will help the child to become aware of the situation and also to develop self-control.

3. Be sure to tell the child the consequences of rough behavior. The child must know what will happen if he throws tantrums. Only then will the child learn to control her emotions.

4. Boys like to lead. They follow their parents in most aspects, from eating habits, talking, etc. So if you can show them that you are in control of your feelings, they will learn from it too.

5. Children need to be able to recognize their feelings, whether they are positive or negative. Once they are able to do this, it will be easier for you to train them to control themselves.

6. Enroll the child in different courses that require self-control, such as karate, music, dance, etc. This will automatically instill self-control behavior in them.

As a parent, this is not an easy task. If you’re able to communicate well with the child, understand her needs, and make them understand the situation, I think it’s easy to instill self-control behavior.
