Top 10 Classic Arcade Games of All Time

Having a “best of” list always leads to arguments. Especially when talking about something like video games. They all have their favorites and are as loyal to them as a dog is to its master. For this list, I’m strictly referring to pre-1990. This should be the definition of classic arcade games. It’s like ’60s rock and roll: they turned oldies into classic rock. The 80s should go down in history as the most important in the history of video games.

So, with that said, here’s my top 10 best classic arcade games of all time, very unofficial (it changes every day):

No.10) Pac-Man– The originator. The video game that even your grandmother heard of.

No. 9) Donkey Kong– Introduced the world to Mario. That alone should make it an institution.

No. 8) Burger Time– The song alone was worth a quarter of what it cost to play it.

No. 7) Ghosts and Goblins– A game ahead of its time. Added atmosphere to the game world.

No. 6) Run faster– The original car game. There have been car games before and after. But this is the king. It hasn’t been duplicated yet.

No. 5) Road Flyers– What’s better than a driving game? A driving game where you can shoot cars.

#4) Athletics– The first button masher. I almost lost an index finger with this one.

No. 3) Gauntlet– The cabinet was HUGE! The first game I saw where 4 players could play. To an 8 year old, it looked like a mini-cathedral.

#2) Against– Before first person shooters ruled the gaming world, this was the shooter game everyone was looking for. The NES version got more credit, but were it not for the 30 life code, the arcade version was far superior.

No. 1) Double Dragon– The only 80’s arcade game I’ve ever played where I sometimes couldn’t put a quarter in the slot because the machine was full.
