video game writing

Video game writing simply means the ability to create a story for a video game. It is similar to novel and screenwriting, but does not have a formal format. The usual method of video game writing takes place first as a novel and/or screenplay and then transfers to a storyboard for further clarification and approval.

Concept to Final
Video game writing begins like any other form of writing; put words on paper. From there, the game team constantly revises the originally agreed-upon storyboard to continue animation sequencing and story creation.

design
As mentioned above, video game writing is very close to screenplay and novel writing. However, storyboarding is what makes game writing special and unique. The entire script or novel is approved before the storyboard is done, because it takes much longer to develop a storyboard. In storyboarding, animation is almost never top-notch drawing.

In fact, many storyboards (even at a professional level) are done with stick figures and are constructed simply to “get the point”. There are two different storyboards; cinematics and gameplay. Cinematic follows the same writing process that animated films follow. Game storyboards are chronological storyboards designed to take the main character from the beginning to the end of the game.

Grooves, stumps and stops
Grooves, stumps, and stops are sections of a storyboard where the character departs from the main story. A grind is where the character stops due to a current situation and must get out of a situation before they can return to the main story. A stump is a puzzle that must be completed in order for a game to return to normal. They are usually used to unlock sections, items, weapons, or abilities that will allow the character to progress further in the game. A stop is typically used in RPGs and is where the main character must complete secondary objectives or reach a certain point in order to progress through the main story. Most games will only use two of these three methods, but they are all intended to increase the length of the game and serve no other purpose.

Tests at every stage
Evidence, like novels and screenplays, is of great importance, but not for the same reasons. Testing the story of a game is meant to do two things; subtitles and voice acting. Almost all games have the option for subtitles, which allow lines used in the storyboard to be placed directly into cinematic or gameplay scenes. Voice actors rely on correct spelling and grammar in video game writing to generate the correct voice, emotion, and line settings.
