Expired real estate and for sale by letters from the owner

One of the hardest things for real estate agents would be to put pen to paper and create a letter that they can mail to homeowners who have an expired listing, or who are perhaps selling on their own. Expired and For Sale By Owner (FSBO) listings are an essential part of becoming a successful real estate agent. So what exactly do you say in your letter that will pique the owner’s interest? Would it be the old worn-out line that says you have buyers for your house?

That being said, would there be any additional interesting information for them? If not, your letter goes into that famous circular file. All his hard work crumpled up and disappeared. Not only that, it is a well known fact that one letter alone will not produce any results. Homeowners certainly aren’t running for their phone to call you begging to come and list their property.

Here are some topic ideas of what to send

  • So your house didn’t sell, but here’s how I can help you
  • I specialize in finding homes that have not been able to sell
  • you shouldn’t give up
  • Identify the reasons why your house did not sell
  • I can put MORE money in your pocket than you could sell on your own
  • Have many real estate agents been calling you?

It usually requires a series of letters in sequential order in order to be recognized. Which means that now it’s more than one letter that you have to compose, it becomes a number of letters. This also means a number of good ideas that need to come together to become a well thought out marketing campaign. No doubt writing a letter is hard enough, writing a series of letters is a struggle.

Try sitting down with a blank sheet of paper and starting a letter. Do you find yourself looking at that blank sheet searching your mind for an idea? Just a good idea! It’s not that easy, is it? How much time and effort are you going to have to put in to write all those letters? Another task is reading proofs of all those letters. Possibly the worst thing you can do is send a letter full of spelling and grammatical errors. It’s better to have someone else do it or perhaps a computer program. Do you have time for all this?

As soon as you start the drafting process, you’ll quickly conclude that the amount of time invested can cost you more money than buying letters. Well there is good news, you can buy lettering from a professional and ready to go. There is a huge advantage to buying real estate letters, they can cost a dollar or less per letter. A tremendous bargain if I may say so.

When you finish your letters you will have to send them. It is better if you send them systematically so that the owner sees your name frequently. You will need to keep track of which letters you mailed to whom. You don’t want to send the same letter to someone twice. There are contact management programs available that can do that for you. All you have to do is search for contact management programs using the web to find them. I would recommend a follow up phone call to the owners or perhaps a face to face visit to form a deeper relationship. What you want is to create the opportunity for a consideration to include your property. Good luck!
