The Sugar Glider Buyer’s Checklist

Before buying from any seller, always ask the following questions:

1. Does your business have a license from the United States Department of Agriculture?

This is a decisive question that will tell you if the breeder or the seller is real or not. As we mentioned earlier, sugar glider (SG) farming in the United States is heavily regulated and no one is above the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Agriculture.

An illegal breeder will most likely say, “We’re a very small operation, so we don’t have to get a USDA license.” This is a total lie. All breeders must have a federal license before they can legitimately conduct their business. If the seller changes the subject or doesn’t present an actual copy of the federal license issued by the United States Department of Agriculture, don’t buy from the seller.

2. What kind of support will I receive after purchasing an SG from you?

A bad seller or breeder will tell you that there are dozens of books and websites on sugar bears and therefore no support is needed because the material is readily available. If you hear this, stay away from the seller. A legitimate breeder or seller is aware that post-sale educational support is needed for every purchase.

This educational support will come in the form of printed material that will educate the new sugar glider owner on the basics of proper glider care.

DVDs and even brochures are also given to new owners. A good breeder or pet store will also provide you with contact information so you can call or email them at any time if you have questions about your new honey glider.

3. Can I hold one of your sugar gliders?

This is another acid test that will allow you to find out if the seller really knows about glider farming or not.

A good breeder or vendor will let you choose which hints you want to keep, and you’ll also be able to play with the animals. If the breeder knows what he is doing, the gliders in his charge will be completely familiar with humans and will be very affectionate with any human who wishes to play with them.

The sugar glider should show no signs of aggression or hostility.

4. How old are the sugar gliders for sale?

Ideally, young adult honey gliders should be sold to new pet owners because young adult gliders are easier to bond with new owners than older gliders. The age of the suggestion should be between seven and twelve weeks.

5. Does your company offer any guarantee to buyers?

In the context of sugar gliders, the best guarantee a seller can give a buyer is the replacement of any honey gliders that suddenly become ill and die after a short period of time. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there are two types of warranties a breeder can offer to buyers.

The first applies to a short period of time after the sale has occurred. For example, if your new sugar bear dies after only three days, the breeder must replace the glider free of charge.

For longer periods, such as two or three weeks, a breeder may offer you a “reduced price” guarantee. So if your new sugar bear suddenly dies seven to fourteen days after the initial purchase, the breeder or seller may be able to offer you a discounted replacement. The second guarantee does not entitle you to a free replacement; just a discount
